What Makes An Ace?
Ever since WW 1, a fighter pilot who destroyed five enemy aircraft in aerial combat earned, either officially or informally, the title of "ace". The type of military or naval aircraft shot down made no difference; the destruction of an unarmed transport counted as much as the downing of the enemy's deadliest fighter. The ace had to be a pilot - aerial gunners were no longer eligible, as they had been at times during World War I. The various air arms required confirmation of every victory, either by an eyewitness or by film from movie camera synchronized to operate when the fighter's guns fired.
World War II reaffirmed the legend of the fighter Ace, thanks to the exploits of pilots like Erich Hartmann of Germany, Johnnie Johnson of Great Britain, Saburo Sakai of Japan, I.N. Kozhedub of the Soviet Union, and Americans like Richard Bong, Thomas McGuire, and David McCampbell. The Second World War also demonstrated that the gallant and colorful fighter ace represented the gleaming point on a spear fashioned by thousands of people. The defeat of Germany and Japan revealed that the Ace depended not only on his own sharply honed skills but also on the support of his fellow pilots and mechanics, on the training establishment that shaped him, and on the national economic and industrial base that provided him with a fighter plane, fuel, and munitions.
