Captain Joseph Z. "Joe" Matte
378 F.S., 362 F.G., 9 A.F.
France
August, 1944
Joe Matte was born in Port Arthur, Texas, and was proud of it! After receiving his wings 1 October, 1943, and completing fighter transition training he was assigned as the first replacement pilot in the 362 F.G. in England in February 1944.
On August 20, 1944, near Paris, he shot down four Me-109s and became the first USAAF P-47 pilot in the ETO to down more than three enemy aircraft in a single mission. For this accomplishment Joe received the Distinguished Service Cross for valor!
While assigned to the 362 F.G. he downed three more German aircraft for a total tally of seven confirmed victories.
Being proud of his Texas roots, Joe was quick to let his squadron mates know about the greatness of his home state on every occasion that presented itself! He even named his airplane, "The Eyes of Texas," after a popular 1940s country-western song that's still popular to this day. |
