Captain Clyde A. Curtin
335th FIS, 4th FIW, FEAF
Kimpo AB, South Korea,
July 1953
In August 1953, Clyde Curtin was assigned to the 335th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, then 4th Fighter Interceptor Group, Far East Air Force in South Korea. Flying the F-86F, he downed his first MiG-15 near Siniju on October 11, 1952. On December 16, he scored his second MiG victory.
He then took a rest from active combat to transition Australian pilots from the P-51 to the F-86. Returning to combat, he knocked down another MiG near Sakchu on July 15, 1953. Four days later, he shot down a pair of MiGs near Tupsangni to become the Air Force's 38th and next to last ace of the Korean War.
While serving in Korea, he flew three combat tours of 50 missions each. He named his aircraft "Boomer" because it made a sonic boom every time he broke the sound barrier while flying it...and that was often! |
