1st Lt. James W. Empey,
USAAF
Born in Bath, NY on 15 April 1924, James William Empey enlisted in the Army Air Forces as an aviation cadet on 8 September 1942, at age 18. He graduated from flight traiing with Class 43-H at Luke Field, Arizona and then was assigned to the 59th Fighter Group at Thomasville, Georgia for fighter training in P-39s.
In December 1943 Lt. Empey was sent to North Africa and assigned to the 5th Fighter Squadron, 52nd Fighter Group in Corsica, then flying Spitfires. The group exchanged is Spits for P-51s in March 1944.
Empey scored all five of his aerial victories in 30 days of combat, from 29 May to 28 June 1944. On 29 May, he downed an Me-109 west of Weiner Neustadt, Germany, and on 11 June he shot down two more 109s over Sofia, Bulgaria. Two days later he was credited with a Ju-88 five miles northwest of Landshut, Germany, and he became an ace on 28 July with the destruction of an Me-109 southwest of Bucharest, Hungary. Upon completion of his combat tour he returned to the States to a P-40 training squadron and was released to the inactive reserve in August 1945.
