1st Lt. Frank L. Gailer, Jr.
363 F.S., 357 F/G., 8 A.F.
England
November 1944
Frank Gailer was born in Bakersfield, California and was raised in Great Neck, Long Island. In June, 1942, he entered the USAAF Aviation Cadet program and received his wings at Eagle Pass, Texas on August 30, 1943. He completed fighter transition in February 1944 and was assigned to the 363 F.S., 357 F.G. in Leiston, England in July.
While assigned to the 357 F.G., he downed five and one-half German aircraft between Septermber 13 and November 27, 1944. On the latter date, he shot down two FW-190s, but was unintentionally shot down himself by another P-51 pilot from the 352 F.G. He parachuted safely, but was captured shortly thereafter by Germans and interned in Stalag Luft I until the end of the war.
His airplane was named "Expectant" because at the time he and his wife, Marge, were expecting and they didn't know the gender of their unborn child. |
